Cheung Chau Bun Festival 2024

The annual Cheung Chau Bun Festival, originally a traditional community cleansing ceremony, has now become a month-long celebration attracting many to the small outlying island. While local inhabitants engage in ceremonial rituals and prayer, visitors can entertain themselves at game stalls, handicraft workshops, and Cantonese opera, or even scout for a good spot to observe the Piu Sik Parade. Alternatively, you can take a crack at bun tower climbing!

The Cheung Chau Bun Scrambling competition

Eager participants must prepare for three stages: training, the finalists’ selection, and the actual competition. Safety training sessions will be held on 7 April to ensure all enrolled climbers are familiar with bun tower climbing techniques and relevant safety equipment. The selection day on 14 April is comprised of two rounds to determine the 12 fastest climbers to enter the final.

As the closing event of the festival, the bun scrambling competition will be held on the Pak Tai Temple Playground on 15 May. Finalists will—you guessed it—scramble for buns. Buns marked with different scores are placed at various heights on the bun tower and the climber who has amassed the buns with the highest scores will emerge victorious!
