To fight against Hong Kong’s growing food waste issue, Feeding Hong Kong—a local food bank and the city’s sole accredited member of the Global Food Banking Network—is introducing its first community network programme that aims to tackle this problem whilst raising awareness about food waste and insecurity in the city.

Food collection

Feeding Hong Kong’s main objective is to collect extra food from local households and redistribute it to charities that help those who suffer from food insecurities. This latest programme further encourages the public’s participation in this effort by collaborating with 14 food brands, restaurants, and delivery platforms to offer Hongkongers 16 collection points to donate their extra food.

These brands include popular eateries such as Pizza Express, one-stop coffee shops like Flash Coffee, as well as food delivery platforms such as Deliveroo. The diverse range of participating brands and drop-off collection points aim to make food donation more accessible to people in Hong Kong and their busy schedules Whether you’re out for dinner or simply rushing for your morning pick-me-up, you will find a food collection point near you!

Social media campaign

To drive public awareness of this programme, Feeding Hong Kong is introducing a supportive social media campaign called “#CAN5CAN.” Everyone is encouraged to chip in to this food collection effort by donating five cans of food from their home cupboards that are still within their shelf-life and nominating their peers to do the same on social media. Apart from driving participation in this food collection campaign, Feeding Hong Kong hopes to shed light on food-related issues the city currently suffers under through social media engagement.

Aligned with the theme for Earth Day 2023, ”Invest in Our Planet,” Feeding Hong Kong hopes to kickstart city dwellers’ investment into the planet with their first community network programme and social media campaign.

Feeding Hong Kong’s community network programme will be ongoing until further notice, so don’t worry if you haven’t got extra food to contribute now! Its food collection points will be waiting for when your kitchen cupboards start feeling a little too packed. Learn more about the campaign details and find a list of collection points on the website.
