10 best margaritas in Hong Kong

By Ching Yuen 21 February 2020

We are amping ourselves up for Margarita Day this Saturday, so what better way to celebrate than with a round-up of our favourite margaritas in town? Just like how everyone has different preferences as to what makes a good marg, there are just as many variations to making one. After all, a decent margarita is just like a good friend: a little sweet, a little salty, and can knock you on your butt when you need it!

Zuma

A staple within Hong Kong’s dining and bar scene, Zuma may be most famous for its excellent weekend brunch and top-notch Japanese fare, but their Endo Margarita ($140) proves that margs can go global too. Made with Curado tequila, yuzu sake, fresh sake, and artisanal mezcal, the cocktail is imparted with a unique, smoky flavour.

Te Quiero Mucho

A taco restaurant isn’t a true taco restaurant if they don’t serve a mean margarita. Fortunately, Te Quiero Mucho not only dishes out quality tacos, but their signature Margarita ($98) packs a punch too. Given how close their Central location is to the Localiiz office, don’t be too surprised if you come across our editors there during happy hour, margaritas in hand and crowned with sombreros, just as life should be lived.

Brickhouse

A true veteran of Hong Kong’s Mexican dining scene, Brickhouse brings the best of Mexico City to our shores—it’s everything you imagine a blend of irresistible tacos, creative cocktails, and pumping music to be. The Brickhouse Margarita ($150) is a potent combo of Blanco rum and Damiana liqueur stirred with agave nectar and pineapple juice, finished with Himalayan salt on the rim. We recommend doubling the order because the only thing better than one delicious margarita is two delicious margaritas!

Agave

Presenting 180-plus of the finest tequila brands imported directly from Mexico, Agave is a strong contender for making the best margs in town. This Hong Kong stalwart lets you choose the liqueur you would like to mix with your Margarita ($88–$198) so you can play at being a mixologist for the night. If you feel like sharing, your drink of choice can also come in massive, almost two-litre pitchers ($430) to get the party started.

Los Sotano

Hidden in a basement within Lan Kwai Fong, Los Sotano is one of our favourite hangouts. If not for their regular movie nights or quiz nights, their trademark Los Sotano Margarita ($120) is reason enough to head down there for the weekend. Using Avion Silver tequila, fresh lime, agave, and orange liqueur, you’ve never really had a well-balanced margarita till you’ve had one of these.

Blue Bar

Taking margs to the next level, Blue Bar at Four Seasons Hotel does multiple variations of the venerable cocktail. Order a traditional Margarita ($130) that follows the original recipe, using Jose Cuervo silver tequila, simple syrup, Cointreau, and lime juice, or opt for a mix from the Timeless Classics menu that includes a slightly bigger shot of Purasangre Reposado tequila. We’ve also been told that you can even ask the bartenders to use Blue Curacao so you get an Instagram-worthy blue-tinted margarita!

Taqueria Super Macho

This Baja-inspired taqueria is joining the festivities and celebrating National Margarita Day with pitchers upon pitchers of the good frozen stuff. Dream of the tropics and its relaxing ocean waves with a traditional Margarita ($98) in hand, or opt for the passionfruit version for a flavourful touch. Don’t forget to bring your amigos along, as Taqueria Super Macho is introducing a one-night-only deal on pitchers of the classic drink for just $198!

Vibes

Reviving the classic and historical cocktail (which dates all the way back to the 1930s, by the way), Vibes whips up four creative renditions of margaritas to celebrate Margarita Day. Amongst them, The Four Seasons ($128) uses a tropical juice blend of guava, mango, pineapple, and orange, while Oaxaca Margarita ($128) is shaken with mescal, strawberry purée, and bergamot juice, then served in a salt-and-pepper-rimmed glass. Try all four for the full experience!

Quinary

For a classic margarita, why not head to Quinary and take a sip of Tommy’s Margarita ($120)? Created by famed tequila expert Julio Bermejo and served at his father Tommy’s restaurant in San Francisco, the fabled concoction has lured many from far and wide for a taste. Using premium Don Julio tequila and substituting agave nectar for simple syrup, this margarita lives up to its origins as the signature drink in one of best tequila bar in San Francisco, if not the world.

Quinary, G/F, 56–58 Hollywood Road, Central | (+852) 2851 3223

Caliente

Serving Mexican favourites, Caliente is the place to go for a frozen margarita. If you’re fanning yourself and need something to chill you down amongst the hot and spicy cuisine, opt for their Frozen Margarita ($65–$295), which comes in three sizes for your imbibing pleasure. Made with smooth Jose Cuervo Silver tequila, Triple Sec, and your choice of flavour, we would recommend peach, which always works for us, or fruity lychee for something a little different and unique.
