Hong Kong is bursting with coffee shops, and new openings are appearing left and right. Holding its own against neighbouring rivals South Korea and Japan when it comes to coffee and cafés, our city definitely has its own eclectic roster to boast about. After all, who doesn’t need their daily dose of caffeine or thirst-quenching drink to start the day? Join us as we round up the latest cafés and coffee shops popping up in the city.
Newly opened in Elements, Coffee Hwajeon is a sophisticated café serving everything from sweets and savouries to signature drinks just like you would find at a coffee shop in Seoul. Wind down in its minimalist interior with photogenic Korean snacks and small bites such as the chabssal bukkumi (찹쌀부꾸미; pressed flowers glutinous rice cakes) and strawberry croffle as you sip on a warming cup of Blossom with oat milk.

Soft opening in the newly redeveloped area of Kai Tak, Root Café’s design is true to its name— the shop boasts a soothing aesthetic inspired by nature, trees, and, of course, roots. A selection of sweets and savouries are available, including taro cheesecake, kokedama dome cake, and thick-cut Wagyu sando. Its Midnight Matcha has also been popular for its unusual yet delicious mix of matcha and edible charcoal.

Located in the bustling neighbourhood of Prince Edward, 2 Soon Café’s red brick interior sets the perfect scene for a cocktail or two after the sun goes down, while the decorative pots of cacti dotted around the shop make for a refreshing setting for your morning coffee. 2 Soon’s menu is populated with many fusion choices, with the beef ribs with rice noodle rolls and cheese potstickers being a surprisingly delicious combo that you have to try. Order a Tieguanyin latte to complete your fusion feast.

Niksen Koffie brings to city dwellers the Dutch art of doing nothing through its soothing drinks and delicious bites. Wind down at the shisha bar or simply plop down on one of Niksen’s irresistibly comfortable chairs as you dig into hot plates such as the shelter soft shell crab pasta and smoked salmon flat bread. Its parfait cups are also delicious, Instagrammable, and available all day. And the cherry on top: Niksen is dog-friendly, so you can enjoy doing nothing together with your furry friend.

A cosy little joint located on Tai Ping Shan Street, Goose Chocolate is the perfect place to be for chocolate and coffee lovers alike. In terms of mains, it only has one: a hearty all-day breakfast complete with two large slices of spongy focaccia. Chocolate is obviously the staple here with a range of speciality flavours available. We also recommend the velvety chocolate pudding and refreshing cacao tea.

Recently opened on the corner of Burrows Street in Wan Chai is a quaint artisan roastery, Dimanche. Named after the French word for Sunday, you can expect nothing but chill vibes at this corner shop. Manned only by the owner, Dimanche is a truly down-to-earth joint perfect for coffee lovers to get together. Beans are curated by the owner who will adjust the intensity and flavours of your coffee to your liking in the brewing process—a truly tailored experience.

Soft opening in TST, Triangle Coffee currently has a compact menu with only three mains and six light meals to choose from, which makes this the perfect place for indecisive eaters. Although limited on choices, what is available is no less delicious and innovative. Spice things up with the kung pao chicken linguine if you dare, or stick to a classic smoked salmon and egg salad croissant for the less adventurous foodies. Triangle also offers a selection of coffee staples, teas, single-origin chocolates, and speciality sodas.

In this cat-themed café you can find the adorable animal in almost everything—the food, the plates, even some of the Japanese-inspired wooden interiors. Signature items include the matcha and hojicha cat-shaped roll cakes, chosen for its adorable appearance as well as rich tea flavours. The Neko black sesame shaved ice is another Instagrammable choice and one to keep in mind as the temperature rises in the coming months. Setsugekka is definitely for the tea lover, as on the drinks menu you will find a long list of teas, including traditional matcha and hojicha, matcha specials, cold brews, and a selection of brewed teas.
